I have to say after I got my Sigma EQ Mini (Ripmax) I've never had any LiPo puff up again.

Whenever I come across a puffed up LiPo one way or the other I don't dare using it. To me the puffing is a clear warning that something went wrong at some point. I've even poked a puffed LiPo (a really small one tho) with a needle, put it on the pavement and stepped back a few meters to watch it burn to death. Seemed safer to me than to keep that thing inflated as it was until I could finally dispose of it properly.

Funny that you should mention corn fields being cut down, maybe 3 months ago i lost a FPV tricopter the corn fields were not cut down,i had a lost model alarm on it,and the power became disconnected and the lost alarm failed to work.i never did find the tricopter,,,,,maybe 300 quids worth !!!

Ouch Thunder, I hate to hear you lost your copter. I bet the farmer found it, but after it cycled through the combine, wouldn't have been much left of it.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

i did a 3 day aerial search with another quad and a Mobius camera, and i spent several combing through the field,no joy,i didnt think i could lose a tricopter that big.The farmer said that it wasnt found by him or his staff,i reckon the harvester has eaten it It had full FPV om board,ah well,,,,if you take a gander at the thread,Aluminium Tcopter on the main forum then you will see my NEW bigger tricopter,,cheers

maybe hook up some flares you can fire off or even something that colored smoke would come out of.

Nice thought,,,but how do you set them off if you lose the link between TX and RX

If I was u I'd set up a battery pack that kicks in when the main battery dies or gets disconnected somehow. Not powerful enough to run the motors but to keep the receiver and any peripherals alive.

Or don't fly near corn fields to begin with. Whenever I go flyin' I make sure to do it where I A) have enough room and B) can easily find my model if it does an unplanned landing of any kind.

P.S. I could probably even very easily design a circuit that keeps the spare power source disconnected until the main power source dies.

Ok, just a little something I've cobbled together in Paint real quick.

Explanation:

Parallel to the ESC u have a double pole relay under power, holding the switch side in the "normal power" position. If the main battery fails for some reason the switch side is no longer held in said normal position but falls to the "emergency power" position due to the relay also losing power. And BAM, ur receiver still works fine and u can switch on any means of finding the model again (or if it's a plane ur flying and it's still airborne u can still control it on the way down).

That said, this is just the first idea that came into my mind, there are much less power consuming ways to do this than having a powered relay coil parallel to ur ESC.Emergency Power.png

It was my untidiness that cost me the tricopter, the lost model alarm is not self powered and relies on the main power pack for power,i hadnt tidied up the lipo power cable,it was hanging loose and the crops managed to disconnect it,i am awaiting delivery of a self powered alarm, have been flying there for 7 years and never lost a model and in the UK we cannot pick and choose where we fly,we take what we can get, getting consent from a farmer to stand on his land and fly over his fields is near impossible, they just wont let ya.It was just bad luck, and my laziness.

it didnt even cross my mind to do that, reason is that i didnt know that the TX RX connection was broken,,,,,i actually stood on the top of a mound of muck and flicked the switch to activate the lost model alarm,,,,and i was stood on this pile of crap listening for a buzzer going off,i was thinking to myself [ it aint very loud ] and that is when i noticed that there was no connection between TX RX,,,,,,thats when i started mumbling expletives !!!!!!! ha
