Am I alone in wanting to get back to playing old fav's like Wing Commander .... Grand Prix 2 ..... F19 Stealth Fighter etc. ?

Of course to play these on a modern Win 7, 8, 10 machine - you are forced into DOSBox ..... and of course where is the parallel port ?

I have a few old PC's ..... remember 286, 386 and 486 ? early Pentiums ? Yep ... I have ... and I am considering dragging out from under the bench and restoring. I have kept power connected to a few and they actually do fire up ...
I've already found my 'TRUST FORMULA 1' wheel / pedal setup and managed to find my old discs for GP2 and Grand Prix Legends ...
Just need to find a place to set them up ... cobble a monitor ... see if they still work.

Ultimate aim ? Wing Commander. I spent many hours shooting Kilrathi ......

Am I alone ?

I'd like to give MDK another try. Back when I first played it it took way too long for me to understand what I had to do.

I was never any good at Role Playing games like Kings Quest etc. or Lounge Suit Larry.

Late 80's .. early 90's - I was working in Saudi Arabia and there I put together a huge collection of discs .... programs, games, applications that I still have today. it runs to shoeboxes full of 3.5" and 5.25" floppies ... they observed no CR there ... and all was available. Seems a shame its all wasted now as its all DOS based.

I too love a lot of the old games, cannon fodder, lemmings, civilization2, railroad tycoon, 1602. i have an older computer running xp that can play civ2 and rail tycoon. Have just discovered dosbox and gog for some of them. Have boxes full of games that wont play on new windows machines, loved all my flight sims.
Hey DM, I heard rumours you crash better than Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr😃

Not DOS games but I recently got into Falcon 4.0 and the community mod, BMS, that continued developing it into a solid 64 bit simulator. It's quite a learning curve but definitely a ton of fun. I also have continued playing the sims I grew up with, namely Jane's WWII fighters, MS CFS3, and European Air War.

(And I'm really excited for MS Flight Sim 2020)

Not really into todays games as most require online link-up ... much prefer the older stand-alone games.

I looked at F1 2019 .... fabulous life-like graphics .......... but online connection required. Sorry forget it.

Must go through my Disc boxes ...

Btw, is anyone else here furious about the support for Windows 7 being dropped in Jan '20 without a proper alternative having shown up?

TBH ... Win7 was a while back superceded by 8 ... then 10 .... so it is really old hat ...

My Laser machine runs Win 7 Enterprise (version I had never heard of till repair shop installed it).
My Netbook Acer One runs Win7 Starter

My working machines like one here now run Win10 Enterprise and Pro ....

Do I worry about updates ? Yes - because they slow the bl***y machine down while downloading - then usually take ages to install ! But otherwise ? Never see any real difference in use before / after ...

Well I was happy with XP...

(imo Win 10 isn't bad. Much better than Win 8)

Well until now everyone I've talked to who uses Windows 10 told me that Windows 7 was far better, and having dealt with several sh!tty Windows 10 PCs myself I can only agree!

And one thing's for sure: I will NOT be spending any money for Windows 10! Coz why the fuck should I pay for a downgrade, and a forced one at that?

I'm seriously considering a switch to Linux with a virtual Windows on it (The virtual Windows being just for gaming and absolutely NOTHING else).

Funny actually ... last few days - both my works computers have been trying to update from Win 10 '1803' to '1903' update versions as support ends for 1803 on Nov 10. As true to usual MS form ... they spend half the bl***y day downloading the update and installing ......... to then crap out and revert back to previous version.

Tried all the fixes and advice ... so I think I shall be staying with '1803' ...........

I can only say I've had it with Windows now. I'll use my spare hard drive to install a Linux on and try if it can do everything I need, and if so then I'll get rid of Windows entirely.
