This is my second RCPowers build. I learned a lot from the first build, Su-34, and was able to assemble a much better model. I learned how use Foam Cure and really like its properties much better than epoxy or hot glue. Also tried some new paint techniques that worked well. I plan to try it out this weekend. I was so pleased with how the first plane flew that I just had to build another. These park jets are such great fliers, everyone should have one!IMG_2309.JPG  IMG_2310.JPG

Very flashy, nice build.

Hot glue and epoxy have their spots to be used on but the Foam Cure, Foam-Tac and UHU Por is your main glue to use

Thanks wildthing. I haven't tried UHU yet but I did read that Foam Cure had some advantages over Foam Tac. I like the fact that you can sand it, much better than epoxy or hot glue. Still getting the hang of precise cutting and finishing. I used 50-50 thinned artist acrylic paint in a cheap airbrush. Still had some bleed thru at the tape masking joints even after I put a coat of Minwax acrylic finish on the joints before spraying color. You learn something new on each build. That's what makes it fun.

Hi Rfrogner -

Very well done on your build, very clean Did you build that with the Depron you discussed in another thread?

I have been using Foam Cure for several years now, works well for me also. If you have a Dollar Tree store in your area, keep an eye out for this glue, it works exactly the same as Foam Cure yet is much cheaper for me here in Canada anyway and more readily available.

I wrote a couple articles on my blog awhile back giving more details on my experiences with it http://www.migsrus.com/blog/category/foam-cure, the first two articles in the thread cover this Craft Medley glue.

I still like epoxy for seating reinforcement in the foam and mounting control horns and motor mounts as it is a chemical reaction and hardens much quicker. Sometimes the Foam Cure or equivalent takes a much longer time to fully cure if it is not exposed to enough air. Normally between two pieces of foam this isn't too much of a problem as there are enough small air pockets to allow the glue to cure without too much trouble, but I have found with solid things like carbon or wood, it can take much longer (up to 24 hrs) for the bond to fully take.

I like a little dab of hot glue here and there to "spot weld" pieces together likes the tips of the nose for example just to hold them in place while I do the rest of the gluing with Foam Cure. I also like it for mounting servos as it comes off them more easily when recycling to another plane.

Not trying to shove my build techniques down your throat, just sharing some lessons learned. Like I mentioned, if you can find the Craft Medley glue in your area, it has worked out very well for me as it works exactly like Foam Cure at a much cheaper price (for me here in Canada anyway ).

Thanks for the tips I can use all the help I can get. I have looked for the craft glue at a couple of Dollar tree stores and have not found it in stock locally. I even contacted the manufacturer asking where I could buy it and they did not have a source local to me. Hobbyking sells Foam Cure at a reasonable price so that's ok.
I still use some epoxy as you mentioned for motor mounts and cf rods etc. also some hot glue in spots.
Yes I did use the Depron I got from England. I did a few crude tests between the new Aero Depron and some old Depron I had. I did not notice any real differences. If anything the Aero Depron seems a little lighter than the old Depron but I couldn't measure it. The Aero Depron has one side that is a bit smoother than the other but other than that it seemed the same as the old stuff I had. One plus was the size of the sheets from England, about 48X32 inches. Very easy to get one whole airplane from one sheet and no need to piece together some of the larger parts like the main wing panel.

That's great, glad it is working out for you I have found I can stretch my supply of top quality Depron by using other more flexible foams for fuselages, canopies etc where I don't really need the strength.

I have built over 70 (rough estimate ) park jets in the last 5 yrs and I still learn from each build or find new ways to keep the build strong but lighter, part of why scratch building is so rewarding for me.

If you cut a very thin sliver of the depron and aero and compare them by holding them up to the light you will see that the depron has a denser layer on the outside some what like case hardening.
The depron is stronger and a little heavier than aero-depron but I use aero most of the time.
You will find that the aero will dent more easily, but on the plus side it sands far more easily than depron.
Which reminds me I need more aero- depron

Absolutely beautiful plane! And thanks for letting us know your experiences with foam and glue. I always love finding out what is working for others when building their planes.

Maiden flight for my Su-35.

All went well and the plane flew beautifully. Even though I was nervous about the flight it was never a problem. I think I need to adjust the throws a bit as it would turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change! I don't need quite that level of control at my skill level. Very well behaved throughout the flight regime. Surprised at how well it flew at low speed. Nice and gentle and landing was very easy. I must say the RCPowers planes are amazing in their ability to both go fast and fly slow too. This is going to be a fun one to fly.
Take offs are optional, landings are not.

Awesome to hear. What do you have your dual rates set at and how much expo?

I didn't mess with dual rates but had the expo at about 50%. Only got in one flight and decided I needed to adjust a few things before I flew it again. I had the controls at 15 degrees or so I thought. I am going to recheck everything before I take it up again. Obviously with just elevons the control is very quick. I am not complaining as once I got a handle on it the flight was easy. I am still learning how to fly decently and need more air time to get my fingers to calm down. I did learn that in take off I just needed to keep the control light and not over do the movements but let the plane gain some speed before I got too excited. All in all it worked very well.

Use the limit in the DR to adjust your throw. Instead of 100% take it down to 75% or so and maybe lower the expo to 40%. Few test flights and you will have it dialed in to where you love it.

Oh the joys of learning to fly. I miss the trembling knees and death grip on the radio box
I hope you have many more good flights with your RCP SU35 v5. You will be amazed what those planes can do on elevons only.
