I had a Mig 15 / 17 balsa model by Pavel Bosak many years ago with Veco 19 up front. To me - there are classic aircraft and this is one of them.

Certain aircraft have left their mark in History and the Mig 15 certainly earned its place in that. Little did Rolls Royce and British Govt realise that letting them have a number of RR Jet engines would soon after lead to the obsolescence of so many of our front line fighters.

I have various plans for this ranging from Pulse Jet through 049 glow DF ... EDF ... etc.

One of the biggest hurdles for a model builder is to get that fuselage strong enough as a tube carrying the EDF, but light enough to fly .... so I decided that a profile job might be a better bet for ease of construction and stick a 6x4 prop setup up front ....

For things like this ... I don't really create plans ... I hand sketch out a template and then cut. usually - joining together sketch book sheets to make large enough. Below is the 3 view I am working from.

mig15_3v.jpg

Initial dimensions :

Fuselage length (intake to exhaust) : 510mm
Wing span : ~ 650 - 700mm

Decided to stiffen by laminating two 6mm depron fuselage sides ... here's the pattern and the two sides ready to laminate.

I haven't quite decided whether to do similar with the wing ... laminate two 6mm skins ...

Tmain consideration here is to be able to stiffen the wing with spar ... the sweepback effectively splits the spar ...

The elevators also pose an interesting puzzle ... the sweepback here makes it difficult to have a single servo unless the elevators are cut straight across giving narrow at centre, wide at tip. I did consider all moving - but I think the fact its half way up the fin means to need stiffened structure.

Now pondering the wing !!

OK ... fuselage sides laminated ... nice and stiff.

Wing measured and I decided to stay within the confines of the depron offcut I had ... and just so happens to give scale span of 630mm ...

Tail cut as well ...

All friction fit at present - but surprisingly stiff ...

The two 'slivers either side of nose are the wing tips to be glued on after ailerons cut out etc.

The model is fast giving me idea that a 2S setup should fly her ... and if necessary for death defying crazy - 3S !!

Really nothing much to show as its a simple build ... even the swept wing - I managed to have a single CF spar ....

Ideas for servos ... a single servo set into the fuselage so that a double arm extends out to move the ailerons. Single servo set into the fin to move the linked elevators. No rudder.

Motor is the eMax CF2805  2840kv for 7 - 9V and 5 - 6" props. I intend 2S with 5x5 prop.

Ready to go with 1000mAh 2S LiPo = 265gr.

Little bit of touch up here and there with paint  ...

Servos are HK939MG, same physical size as 9gr but metal gear puts them at 12gr. Aileron servo can be seen is buried into fuselage with V rods out to ailerons. Elevator servo half embedded into fin.

I decided to fit a 30A ESC instead of the tiny Racerstar 20A ... just in case I go for 3S ... battery sits on CoG point.

The 2805 on 5x5 and 2S draws 11A and by eCalc gives 1.5 to 1 Power to Weight

I may move motor back if she survives first flight ... I forgot to account for motor length when I cut the profile.

Soloshot Tag mount fitted and that brings her up to 308gr all rigged to launch.

Just tested the 2805 .. 2840 eMax with 3S ... with the 5x5 prop its risking burn out ... at 16A ... but boy what thrust !!

Swapped down to a 4.75 x 4.75 Hobby King APC style ... and that's where she hit Gold .... 14.5A and she was trying to claw way out of my hands ... Kept her going for about 45secs to see what motor temp would be like .. moderate high warm but not hot .. so I think in flight and motor so open to air - she will survive. Judging by the thrust - I don't need WOT ....

Weight of course now up a touch ... the 3S 1300 adds 51gr to the AUW vs the 2S ... so now total is 359gr ...

As posted elsewhere - the 4.75 had far too much torque and she failed to fly.

Today had a 4.1x4.1 and she flew ... but ailerons were so sensitive - she yo-yo'd and I couldn't steady her and in she went. Broke away nose section cleanly - now grafted back on ...

Video shortly.

4.75x4.75 ... flew 3x ... twice with 800 3S then with 1300 3S ..... sweet !

Reckon ideal would be a 1000 3S
