There are companys who specialise in retrieving data of the hard drive platters ... but they are VERY expensive as the drives need to be opened in 'clean cabinet' and then individually spun up. I lost 6 HDD's in my office some years ago when Lightning struck an antenna on our roof ... the shock then transmitted via our network cables frying the HHD boards. Even though it was a Multi-national company - the recovery price was rejected !!
One word of advice ... DON'T let any smart a**e try Norton Tools on the drive !! If they do - its f***** forever. Those 6 HDD's company said no to recovery - I made mistake of giving to a Computer shop after - they reckoned they could do it ... all they did was create door stops !! I now have backups on separate USB drives ... in fact its so convenient that way - I can work from those ...
