Nope, I already have a smooth Baron. That is the guy with the 3D printed ribs, balsa LE & TE and then wrapped with 1mm Depron. 🙂

The 3D ribs was on my mind a while back as well as formers ... but my 3D creation skills are not good enough yet. TBH - I have a time problem to get practising 3D creation.

So far they have worked good for me , the 1600m glider wing is holding up.  Definitely easier then cutting out balsa or foam unless you have the laser to do it.

The laser is what has slowed my learning curve on 3D ... so much easier to create a laser item as its 2D image really.

Well the new Baron using the new hot ironed technique is ready for battle. I did also cap off the end of the wing to make it smooth as possible. Tonight if all goes well today will be combat wars to test it 🙂. here is hoping it lives through the night.

I think it's new name will be Iron Maiden. 🙂

I too like the principle of 3D printed ribs.
I have found a braced structure with a thin 'skin' (0.15 mm) on one side gives the best strength to weight ratio.

This type of rib used in a wing structure. Each ribs weighs 1.3 g.

In this case the skin is 2 mm Depron. The trailing edge is formed by sanding the inside edge of the top and bottom Depron skin. The leading edge a strip of 6 mm Depron added after the wing is complete and is then sanded to the required profile.
The spar is a balsa/Depron/balsa sandwich. The 2 mm thick hard balsa is part of the skin and tapers from 10 mm wide at the root to virtually nothing at the tip.
The aileron servo and its wire are installed before the top skin is added.

52" (1320 mm) span and 8.5" (220 mm) chord. It weighs 5 oz (144 g).
With this type of wing structure the Depron skin provides all the torsional rigidity and about 50% of the bending stiffness, the rest being provided by the balsa/Depron/balsa spar.
