Finally got a chance to maiden my Edge 540 yesterday. It flies just like how you see in the FT video: smooth and very responsive although, it took me several flight to nail down the CG. I started off flying way too tail heavy since I couldn’t move my battery any further so the landing came to my rescue by breaking off the landing gear... once that broke, the CG was good with battery in the same spot all the way up front and got 3 more good flights. Certainly need a ton of expo for this plane to fly smoothly as its touchy like most other FT planes.
I noticed that the landing gear is behind the leading edge of the wing. With tail draggers, two things are going to happen in this config. Plane becomes twitchy in flight and you will find that on landings it will hop and bounce down the runway and will tip nose over.
Check a bunch of tail draggers that are acrobatic and you will see the main gear is always ahead of the leading edge wing which give it much more stability, especially on take off. Use to have a Formula 1 airplane that had that condition of landing gear behind LE and caused the takeoff and landings as I said. Dumped that brand.
My last flight, came in hard and loosened up my motor mount!
Moral of the story is not to use walmart foam since the layers of paper start to peel off easily... other areas it works fine...
Lastly, I still need a good power plant since what I currently have is okay on 3S and good on 4S... A good flyer nonetheless.
JTiger: hows the motor mount on your plane holding up? Does it move significantly?
I like to design and fly unique planes.
