The past few planes we've done at FRCFoamies have pushed score and fold to the limit with their extremely scale, store bought looks and our latest design is no different. Despite the scale looks, the J20 is a very easy build. Choose the twin prop for crazy maneuverability or tone it down a bit with our rear prop TV vanes like on the F22- up to you. Either way, the J20 takes everything you love about our FRC F22 and our FRC Mig 29 and crams it all together.

The J20 is China's 5th generation fighter which looks like it uses pieces from many different fighter jets: a piece of F22 and Eurofighter, maybe a some Saab Gripen, a dash of F35- lots of stuff going on there. As if they took the best features of each one. You would think a long delta canard plane with twin tails has got to be a great flying plane. You'd be wrong. It's a SPECTACULAR flying plane! The J20 may possibly be the perfect all around parkjet!

J20 Testing: Boxermad 84, Fed50H, Newt and F1wanabe

A few weeks ago Jay came to visit me in Pa and we spent the day at the field, along with Fed50h and Newt. We put the J20 prototypes through their paces and here are some testing notes from our testing day at the field:

"The J20 has great pitch stability from its extra length"
"Lifting body fuselage has a ton of lift from such a narrow wingspan"
"Canards give good lift at high angle of attack"
"Twin tails with ventral strakes feel locked in"
"Crazy roll rate!"
"FAST!"

Thanks to KK for cutting me a J20 kit and testing the J20, as well as Andy Timmons. Their testing results were invaluable.

Nice pictures and awesome flying. It looks stable in the wind too. Oh very nice!! It goes together fast and flies super smooth 👌

Thanks for cutting my kit and testing, KK! You've done several of our twin props, how did you like the J20?

Can’t wait till it’s released to the community
fantastic looking jet , will certainly be going for twin motors this time (my 1st time)
classic walk of shame video lol
noticed the motor placement is different on the test plane to the pictures ? Assuming these were just test purposes with the single to come?
any clues on release plans if all options available 🙂

Yeah, having built excellent performing planes by you guys: F-22 with blended wing body (BWB), the modified Mig2.88 twin, single engine and then the Mig29 with twin motors and BWB were all great esp the Mig29, still my favorite. That said, BWB just makes the J-20 so smooth of a flier - it does slip thru nicely. Long story short, it does feel like a mashup of all the planes that all fly extremely well and this is no different.

Once addicted to twin motors, there is no going back - you'll just love it.

The motor placement on the test plane is different than what the plans will come with (mounted on elevons as seen in first post). Motors so far apart provide for better yaw control and the longer control surfaces can withstand the torque rolls from powerful motors. and yes, there will be single engine too - I'll let Greg or Jay fill in rest of the details.

Yes, good eye! What KK said, haha. The initial prototypes were sized proportional to the F22 but because of the extended fuselage on the J20, the lifting body effect gave it such low wing loading it just floated up there in the air!  They actually felt better with adding weight.  So we decided to shrink them by 15% which meant that the twin motor placement needed to go outward.  I'm building the single prop version of the J20 this weekend and we'll go from there. Here's a video of the ULTRA LOW wing loading single prop prototype. Check out that thrust vectoring!

Oh man ... the line forms here.

I am eager to see the finish plans.
Fly like your mad at it.

This latest version we made is by far the best, the wider set motors really does give all the control you will ever want. It's a point and shoot kinda plane, goes in any direction you put it. Here's a video in lower wind of some testing I did back in the UK of the smaller version, but before we enlarged the vertical stabilisers. Some more pics to.  20190528_130932.jpg  20190528_130957.jpg  20190528_130942.jpg  20190528_131007.jpg  20190528_130914.jpg

Very nice design. I really like the 3D printed servo mount things for the canards too... stl? ðŸ˜ƒ

I'll include all stl files with the plans, I've not managed to test it yet but I'll definitely include them if it wo out.

20190602_142038.jpg  20190602_142022.jpg  Getting ready to test the single prop version of the J20. If you've seen Jay's twin prop video, the single prop will have a lot to live up to! But the rear motor thrust vectoring set up we've used in the f22 is on this plane so the performance should be pretty good. Combined with the huge elevons on the j20.... Fingers crossed for decent weather once the paint dries.
