Halloa people,

if you have followed this sage (which has gone on for Years) it's allmost a miracle we now have a PL18 we can actually go out and buy 🙂 But maybe you have Not followed along.. In that case this is simply a step-up by Flysky into a more serious and potentially professional realm of RC...

Link to the radio: FlySky Paladin PL18 at Banggoood

Also: FlySky Paladin PL18 at HobbyKing

And because my full review is a VERY long video.. to start things off, here is a short "who is it for?" video 🙂

All kinds of planes, multi rotors, heli's, cars & boats..

I believe the Module in the back is NOT JR style ... and FW cannot be changed.

Therefore with only 20 memories as well ... I think it more aimed at the person moving up from trainer before they have loads of gear ...

For me with over 55 FrSky setups - to change would be a major undertaking ... shame as the radio looks OK ... but OH !! 20 memories and FlySky Protocol !!

Like with the Nirvana radio, there is a JR-style mount for this radio.
FW cannot be changed? I think you mean: no OpenTX.. which is indeed true.. Maybe in a distant future, but with the horror-story of the Nirvana OpenTX debacle I can't blame them for not making OpenTX a priority.

I am not an openTX user ... I prefer er9x or ersky9x ..... openTX broke away and went of with FrSky which I think limited their programming.

I look at the rear of the PL18 and it doesn't look like a JR module format ... and another guy on another forum reckoned it wasn't JR ..... ???

You have a PL18 .. so what is the truth ... can it take a FrSky module such as the 9xr etc. ?

I'm not sure what that other guy at that other forum was on about.. It seems like he was mostly grasping at straws to complain about "things"..
Just like the Nirvana, you can put a JR-module retainer at the back of the radio..

You can see them at the top-right in this photo:

[Nirvana-TX-by-UndergroundFPV-and-Flysky-Dark-Knight-accessories]
the same ones fit the Paladin radio.

A frsky module: yes.. physically it for sure can. At THIS point in time the firmware of the PL18 only supports Crossfire.. It will support other modules in the future

I have to say that I saw the radio and I thought - hey that's a nice looking radio .. it has raised trim tabs ... side rotary's ... plenty of three pos .. 2 pos ... hall gimbals etc.

Then after watching your intro video ... I went off to see others videos and look online at sales ...

Very nice looking ... good idea ... but sadly IMHO - lost the plot in the end. Crying shame as it could have really taken FrSky on at their own game ... but apart from 16ch's ... its just not quite there.

It may have a USB and Bluetooth ... but why no SD Card slot ... even cheap budget gear have sd cards today !! I certainly do not want to dangle a card reader of a USB slot on a Tx !!

I don't have all the fancy high tech gear so I don't see any advantage to changing my tx, mine is the FlySky TH9X . One that intrigued me was the Jump  ( I think that was the name) but it could do almost any protocol you wanted to.

@Wildthing TWO of those Jumpers were actually in the background at the start of the video 🙂

@solentlife from some parts of the radio you can really see it is based on a years-old idea.. Maybe you have seen all the prototypes over the years?
I might have to do a side-by-side of the gimbals of my Horus X10S & the PL18.. (the ones in the PL18 are very high tech)..
but yeah.. it aint perfect.. the range & speed though.. I wouldn't miss the Horus one bit

Problem with the Jumper ... 1. they tried to copy FrSky by 'jumping' on the OpenTX FW but then closed the door with proprietary code ... upset the Open Source Community as well as FrSky ... 2. Many dealers will not sell Jumper for fear of losing other sales ..... 3. I've read some horror stories about the Jumpers ..

Yes I read that you can plug the gimbals into a PC and program them ... BUT as I also read - a lot of the promised programmable stuff AND module adaptors are still not available ...
But why would I want to mess with a gimbal ?

It still does not detract from fact that FlySky I think have shafted even their existing customer base ... they should have developed the i line more AND accepted that SD Cards and Model Memory are important part of other radios now ..

I expect that soon ... someone will 'crack' the PL18 and make it possible to flash it etc.

Have to admit I'm quite glad that FlySky finally put this radio out as it's been a few years in the making.
I started off with a Flysky i6 (The Turnigy branded version) and went to a Turnigy branded i10 after a while which was a fantastic radio, except for the firmware on the Turnigy version was flawed and a bit buggy with the model management, and in true Hobby King fashion they washed their hands of it so I was left with a radio that couldn't keep up with my ever expanding model collection.
I then moved onto a Turnigy 9XR-Pro when they were selling them off for pennies and used that for a good while with the MultiModule so I could keep using my FlySky receivers but it was a little buggy at times so I ended up switching to FrSky bit by bit and actually installed an FrSky module inside my 9XR so I could use that as well as the R9 long range module.  It also introduced me to ERSky9X (or ERSkyTx as it's now called) and the amazing work by Mike Blandford who writes the code.  I've never had a radio where I wished it had a certain function and after a quick message on a forum I get a custom firmware written for me with those features included!
Eventually though (after a cock up on my part with the 9XR) I bought a FrSky X9D+ and it's been fantastic, except I immediately "upgraded" to ERSkyTx and never even entertained using OpenTX on it purely because of the support that's available for that system and the ability to transfer all of my models from the 9XR directly into the X9D.  It's also had the hall sensor gimbals added and a custom painted case shell added, all very cheap and very straight forward to upgrade with detailed information available directly from FrSky on how to do both.

So, other than the issue of converting back from a quite expensive upgrade to FrSky receivers over the past couple of years, the fixed firmware is what would stop me from going back to the FlySky radio.

The PL-18 does look very impressive though and I'm pretty certain if they can provide the support for it there will be a good healthy user base built up but it definitely relies on them keeping the support and firmware updates running which sadly seems to be the area FlySky have been quite lacking in the past.
Whoever said nothing is impossible had obviously never tried slamming a revolving door...
