I have been toying with idea to go fishing off the beach using my Phantom 3 Drone ... but am not willing after thinking about it - to risk the model.

It would have had a simple pin arrangement that a loop would slip over ... fly out ... turn 180 and it slips off ... tackle drops into the sea.

Then I thought - why cannot a simple profile fixed wing job do it ? Hand launched with a Glider Release fitted ... so fly out ... hit the switch and bingo tackle drops away ... fly back and land on the beach. Of course it would have to be a tractor prop to avoid the line.

Anyone any ideas ... ??

I'd say u'd have less of a risk using the quad than using a plane. At the low altitude 1 gust of wind can be enough to turn the plane sideways and before u can react it's already splashed into the drink. And from my experience its just about ALWAYS windy around big bodies of water. As long as the Phantom 3 is fast enough to fight the wind it's clearly the safer option here. As far as I know it's 100% self-stabilizing, including GPS to hold its position, and has a return to home function.

So what I'd do is to use a cheap 2-channel or ideally even 1-channel remote set, hook up a servo to the receiver and have that open whatever contraption u can think of that holds the tackle in place.

Then u can fly off into the distance, dragging the fishing line behind u, drop the tackle at the desired location and fly back home using whatever method u feel like using.

Or maybe u've got a cheaper quad that u don't care about as much but is still strong enough to fight the wind, then u should use that, but a plane does more harm than good here IMO.

My P3P I know can do it ... but at $600 minimum to replace if it goes down ... my Wife would kill me after my previous P3S went into the river !!

Agreed about wind ... was thinking about a decent size foamie to fight it ..

mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I've seen videos of quads that have water bottle floats and such. Maybe if you did some conformal coating and added some floats that would be enough to ensure recovery in event of a crash

The fishing is of the beach into seawater .... and the waves even on balmy days break ... so if quad / model even gets close to the water - its a gonna

Fair enough

You will have to build the floats in a way that it is self righting 🙂

Perhaps a foray into large RC flying boats is in order? ðŸ˜‰

Not being funny or rude ... but the prevailing winds beat onto the coastline and even in relatively calm weather - the waves breaking are too much for any RC boat or float plane.

If you scroll to 1:10 and forward ... you will see even with literally no wind - the waves are a little more than RC can put up with. Usually the seas are far more than that with breakers all along and about 30 - 40cms high ..

The beach though would provide reasonable landng for a well powered fixed wing ... having hand launched with the line attached about the CoG point.

This video ... you can see that with very small change in wind ... very light at start and then at about 4:25 .. it starts to change ...

This year - we were supposed to take my boat down the coast to do the fishing ..... idea to sit just far enough out to be clear of the breakers and cast back toward the beach .... but its a long way from my house mooring to the beach site ... and we just didn't get the time.
