I am sure that many have found that converting a full graphic picture or 3 view to an outline plan difficult. For myself - I had in past resorted to Vector programs more designed for mapping to do it. Reason being that removal of the full colour graphic is a daunting task in any usual graphic program.

Well someone has thought about this and there is a program called 'Tracing' which is a free download ... YES FREE !

Ok its not easiest in the world to get perfect outline ... due to the drawing tools, BUT it does a remarkable job in such a small package.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/tracing/9nblggh6czcl?activetab=pivot😮verviewtab

It at least gives an outline to work on ... save as a graphic ... then load to Paint or similar to clean up.

I would think that the best tool to use would be a Light Pen that can use the computer screen. I tried with a pen / pad - but it was worse than using a mouse - I need practice !!

I didn't find it difficult in the least when I made my profile BF-109. Just took a 3 side view off the internet, scaled it up and used its outline for the parts of the plane. For that I copy-pasted the picture within the same window of paint, cut everything off that wasn't needed for each part (for the vertical part of the fuselage I cut off the landing gear, for the horizontal part I cut off the wings and elevator, for the wing I cut off the fuselage ahead and aft oft the wing and so on) and boom, I had a full set of templates to print out and cut along their outlines. Didn't even bother removing the details on the drawings and leave just the outline.

I agree that is fine when we are making for ourselves ... my Hunter ... Mig 15 ... Vulcan were all similar to that - just use the 3 view ...

But my post is about outlines that then become plans. We had a guy ask about the OV Bronco and he uploaded a graphic ... of course no problem to scale the graphic ... but creating an outline plan for anyone to use is not quite the same.

I want to start actually posting the plans of what I build instead of just a build log and 3 view. I'm useless at Sketchup or any CAD ... so this is a way for me to get around that.

Not now, at the moment I don't feel like logging into my microsoft account any more than I need to.

I started wit the free version of DrawPlus and then I spent about $40.00 to upgrade it to DrawPlus X8 . It gave me some 3D capabilities (minimal) but it also allowed me to import and export pdf files which of course made it easy to print your plans.  Back a couple years was the P-38 I designed using it .

Well fortunately I won't have to use Windows 10 if everything works out with switching to Linux.
