I am currently building it to fly at the club, as a thermal soarer.

Seems better designed and built than the ST Fox, but they are still some glitches, as can be seen from build logs posted on Youtube.

I have a problem I can't solve for the moment, the wing spar which is aluminium doesn't want to fit in the metal square tube in one wing, in the other it goes smoothly in.

I have checked that the square tube is not obstructed, a 6mm rod goes in easily. I have trying lubing the aluminium rod, to smooth it with tooth paste, to round it's tip, to no avail, it goes in for a little more than half of what it should, and then gets struck.

Do you have an idea on how to solve this problem?

Sorry, after an unsuccessful fight yesterday, this morning, with more filing of the tip of the rod, it went in.

So glad you sorted the problem.
I would have said buy some bags of ice from the supermarket and pack it round the spar to shrink it down and leave the other part in the hot sun to expand it.

Thought of something like you suggest, what stopped me is how to remove afterwards the wing spar for the wing.

The glider is beautiful, seems to fly well as seen on Youtube (not an easy glider to fly), but has many stupid flaws that require fixing. Sure that designers never tried to build one from their kit.

A bad landing with such a leverage of wings will wreck the fuselage with a very difficult repair, assembling wings and servos in the field will be tedious.

The Phoenix 1600 mounting of wings is better thought, and can be improved easily.

Although not pretty there is still a lot to be said for elastic bands to hold the wings on.
Cartwheel landings on sail planes are really destructive.

It is very disappointing when you have to do so many upgrades and modifications on a supposed ARF plane.

Yes, but a correctly built kit of an ASW 28 glider doesn't cost around 100 €.

My Vagabond XL from Hacker, for instance was a pleasure to assemble and later fly, but the airframe only was half more expensive than that, without servos, nor motor.

You are right, that is the main mod I made on my Phoenix to slope soar (copied from Newton Airlines blog).

Well atleast that is sorted out, nothing worse then crashing a plane and you can't find anything wrong.

Needs to be confirmed by a good flight, I am ashamed at my stupidity, I bought it near the end of last year flying season, and this year I built it, I had already bought good servos for her because I suspected the ones mounted.

But as some had no problems with them I thought (hum, shouldn't say that) I'll try to fly with the already mounted servos, and I'll change them later.

On a few of my planes, I have good servos mounted (Bee 2, Ezglider, Vagabond, Fox), and guess what, they fly better.

When building my Vagabond XL I followed Pierre Rondel's recommendations by the letter, and surprise she flew marvellously from day one.

To get the correct CG, even after removing the whole interior, battery tray, and pilot, I must place the battery a whopping 8 inches further back (under the wings) than the rearmost position possible with the standard battery tray.

An ASW 28 semi-scale is not a very forgiving glider by definition.

110 $ for this glider (motor, esc and six servos is too good to be true).

In these dimensions, you must have an airframe very rigid to cope with the torsions in flight, that is not the case, and due to the fuse material, and tail mounting, reinforcing it at weak points is not easy at all (as was the case with my ST Fox built in EPP).

My comment is one of utter disbelief (8 inches further back for the battery after removing 100 g in the nose is something enormous).

If you use the glider standard and follow instructions, you 'll crash as did the president of our RC club, who is an aeronautical engineer, is in the hobby for more than 40 years, and builds 3 m wingspan planes, directly scaled and adapted from the plans of the real plane, and they always fly right from day one. He is not a glider specialist, but he has built and flown many gliders kits before (he also slope soars occasionally).

His ASW 28 still flies only with a little motor and flaps, when he stops motor she goes down like a dive bomber.

Mine, helped by a friend who is a true glider specialist (he built custom RC planes for scientific projects) begins to glide hands off (after 4 week ends of tuning and a lot of luck to still be in one piece in my hands).

Once more, I point to the internet reviews that don't tell the truth (I suspect many receive planes for free, so are not objective at all).

I don't expect an 110 $ glider to perform like a 1000 $ kit, but I expect her to be flyable, I don't expect a 2,6 m ws glider to perform worse than a 1,6 m ws from the same company.

Those gliders were the last ARF I will ever buy, and I want to share my experience with others, and avoid them sorry experiences.

I had no problems at all with my EZglider from Multiplex (electric fault from HK Esc not their fault ), my Bee 2 from Windrider, or my Vagabond XL kits.
