I first got interested in landing gear when I tried to duplicate a F-22 short take off and steep landings with movable leading edge slats. That part is fun and workable. The landing gear was a failure.

Having a purchased F-16, the gear fit beautifully on the FFF F-22. Started with level nose gear(no le deflection) and ran it first on blacktop. I covered over 120 ft before elevator got it airborne. Set nose +5 same, then +10 same, then 15 it lifted off about 50 ft. Looked weird with +15 nose.
Then tried in soccer field. Almost the same. One time, plane's nose pop upped when I hit a bump to early, stalled and crashed.
Then added more elevator in prop's air flow, shorten distance some, but touchy flying.

Now let's look at gear.
Gear bends too easy, if you go thicker, more weight.
You will need to add servo or chain off rudder servo. Again more weight.
I suffered major foam damage when plane stalled on takeoff from field. To reinforce, so it doesn't happen again and again, would take a lot of added weight to fuse.

So, this lesson was very valuable to me. Landing gear is a waste of time and adds excessive weight and takeoff distance. I wish someone else would try it on their model for comparison.

Since my purchased F-16 nose gear sits in inlet of EDF, and main gear under the wing, it will probably bend/collapse/tearout in the grass runway and do great damage.

The lesson I have just learned is my F-16 is now flying without gear. I will hand launch from the initial flight. Lesson learned.

If you look at some of the most recent posts over on the Mig29 V2 thread, Maestro experimented with landing gear on a V2 Mig. Unfortunately he had a rather than ideal landing which banged up his nose gear, but he might be a good person to contact to compare experiences.

I personally agree with you, I think foamie parkjets are much less complicated without landing gear, but then my field is grass and allows for pretty soft landings and required rather large planes with large wheels to be able to taxi, takeoff and land on the runway, something I can't justify doing to one of my parkjets...

Havin youre parkjet without a landing gear is definitely a lot less trouble, less weight and probably safer in the long run.

But u did not get into this hobby for safe. I came to have fun, and for me seeing a plane taxi on the asphalt and taking of in a somewhat scale way makes it more fun, trying nice lines for landings is also a challenge and I consider it fun.

I did rip the landing gear of my mig on the second flight, but I learned me a lesson or two.. Do not experiment in high winds. Do not fly with bend control surfaces. Watch out for the tail heaviness!!

I love my parkjets without landing gear, but I loved the one with just the same.

I like having at least one jet with gear in my fleet. Take-offs, landings, and touch-and-gos are a lot of fun for me.

Have you tried takeoffs and landing in the grass/dirt?
Would like a video on that.
