Arrow Dave's Building Supplies and Power Systems

RC Build Accessories Master List
Hey guys, alot of people ask me what kind of stuff I use on the experimental planes I build. So I made this list, I hope it's helpless!

Power Systems Ebook
This Ebook teaches you what prop, motor, esc, battery to get for your plane!

Building Supplies
- I use mostly 6mm White Depron. I found the white is just slightly stiffer than the Grey Depron.
- I will use 3mm Depron for shaping bodies sometimes.
- I use mostly 3mm Carbon Tubes.
- Scott Lott got me to try the 1mmx6mm Carbon Strips and those are nice too!
- Control Horns, Motor Mount, and Pushrod Package.

Power Systems
Video HERE!
Smaller Jets (For 10-20oz planes, motor puts out about 18oz of thrust)
- Micro Jet 370 V2
- 6x4 PROP (and Reverse Prop if I am doing a twin motor)
- 3cell, 15-20C, 1300 Li-po Battery

Medium Jets (For 20-30oz plane
s, motor puts out about 24oz of thrust)
- Super Sonic 400 V2
- 6x4 PROP (and Reverse Prop if I am doing a twin motor)
- 3cell, 15-20C, 2200 Li-po Battery

Larger Jets, (For 2-3lb planes, motor puts out about 32oz of thrust)
- Mega Jet 480 Motor V2
- 6x4 PROP (and Reverse Prop if I am doing a twin motor)
- 3cell, 15-20C, 2200 Li-po Battery

Servos

- If I'm just going to fly something small around I might go with the Corona MG.
- For all my experimental stuff I go only with
HS-65MG and HS-82MG. I can not afford to have a servo go out when test flying, that's why I pay extra for the Hitec servos.

Gyros

I have tried the fancy heading hold gyros and don't like them for what I am doing. I use and stick to these little Esky Gyros because they are so simple to use and do exactly what I want.

OnBoard Camera Video Review HERE!
- This little Grayson Cam is the best! Its nice to get it from them because it comes with everything you need! You do not need to buy the memory card or anything else extra, its all included.

Battery Voltage Indicator
I use these voltage indicators every time I fly to check and double check the voltage of each battery before a plane takes off! Please see the VIDEO REVIEW HERE.

Radio Transmitter
- Most guys are getting the Spectrum DX6i. Though I don't have this one, many of my friends have it. I like it alot and recommend it if you can afford it (goes for about $200US).
- The ExceedRC 2.4GHz 6CH radio is very nice and is about $60! I do have this one and it works very nice for the price. The downside its not something you want to keep for life and it must be programed from your home computer. Sometimes you can find this radio a few bucks less at HobbyPartz.
- See my thread here on these 2 radios!

I would love to know the brand of on board mixers you use.

Oh right, elevon mixers. Ya know, I could not find a good line on those on the internet so I get them from my local guy.
Anyone know a good website where you have gotten elevon/delta mixers?

i am not sure on this, but you can make them. (i had to for my floppy disk flyer) the floppy disk plane i made (from plans, but it was modifyed) uses elevons, and i built a mixer. basically it is a little wooden box with a servo on slides and another one pushing it.

basically on the outside of the box, there is a servo controlling the pitch(elevator), and the servo in the box would controol roll (ailerons).

when they work to gether, bam flawless mixer.

I would take a picture of it and post it, ut the plane is made out of corrigated plastic and sealed all around except for the battery door. For me to open it up i would have to unbond the wings, which are stuck on very well with some poxy.

|servo|~............ |servo |................. ~
|..1....|~ ............|...2...| ..................~

.: blank space

so servo one pushes servo 2

not too complicated to build...

Ha, wow cool ecookman! I love the sketch there! Yes, post some pics if you get a chance.
I've seen leadfeather on RCG do something similar to that once. It was so impressive!

Grayson Hobby has the mixers. GWS Elevon mixers are what Scott Lott uses, and they work fine for him.

hey guys

You know there is "normal" Props and "reverse" prop rite? What are they for?

Can they just change the motor's wire instead??

Thanks

Angus

Angus,
Right, they can just change the motor wires instead, exactly!
But, what they use them for is when you have 2 motors on the same plane its nice to have one spinning one way and one the other, it eliminates torque roll doing that. Does that make sense?

So I'm really sort of just getting rolling in the whole rc thing and for right now I'm wanting to get a power combo I can use on a few different planes seeing as I'm a bit strapped for cash after just buying my Spektrum DX6i (which I love!). I see that mostly what's recommended for your PDF planes is the Micro Jet 370 V2 combo. I was wondering if it would hurt to get the Super Sonic 400 V2 combo to be able to use on a couple slightly bigger planes as well, ie my Wild Hawk I'll probably mod up like in your video. From a little bit of reading I've done it seems like the weight of the planes recommended for these to be used on overlaps a bit and with the 400 being about in the middle it seems like a good choice. My thinking is bigger is better but I'm feeling like I'm probably wrong with that mind set here.. Like will the plane be even faster with the bigger one? Or will the extra weight hurt me? What're the pros/cons of getting the 400 combo to use on like the X20 for example (which i bought the plans for a couple days ago) so I'll also be able to switch it out to my Hawk.. Sorry for the really long post lol!

robertd,
Hey VERY GOOD THINKING! Thats exactly what you want to figure out. Best system for the long run to save money.

I was thinking about the MICRO Jet 370 on the Wild Hawk the other day... the SUPER SONIC 400 has SO MUCH extra power on the Wild Hawk I do not think you would miss a few ounces less of thrust if you went with the Micro on the Wild Hawk...

Let me put it this way... I was not able to go full blast for very long with the 400 on the WH cause it was just TOO fast for me. I was worried about it breaking apart in the air or crashing bad.

So, I would say go with the MICRO 370... and if you use it and don't like it (which I doubt) let me know and I'll straight trade you for a 400. I have a 400 here I used only a couple times and I would gladly trade it for a 370.

Reason is, the 370 is less thrust but its also less weight, so it really makes up the difference. Plus, the 370 is going to go SO MUCH better on the X-20 and all the rest of the PDF plans!
