Silly 3CH beginner plane!

Posted May 18th, 2009 at 05:51 AM by FridayTestFlying (Friday Test Flying)
This is the official RCPowers review of the ExceedRC 3CH Slope Diver sold through NitroPlanes. It is the brother of the best selling Wild Hawk and uses the same electronics. It's simple, strong, has good control surfaces, well powered with a very good glide slope when the motor is off. Overall, it's a good beginner plane that I recommend.

Specs
Wingspan: 42"/110cm
Length: 32"/ 82cm
Weight:
15.9oz/500g
Motor: 380 Size, Brushed
Prop: Folding Prop (2 included)
Battery: 8.4V 600mAh NiMh (7 cell)
Charger: 4 hour wall charger
Radio: 3Ch, Pitch, Rudder, Throttle
Radio Range: 72mhz, 1600'/500m

The Wild Hawk is still the best beginner plane overall in my opinion, by far. This Slope Diver is a great 2nd plane or even a good first plane for someone who is really good on the RC Flight Simulator. It flys and glides a little faster and farther than the Wild Hawk. The plastic body makes it much stronger overall. This strength is also it's weak point as the wings, tail, and nose mounted motor are what takes the brunt of the crash. That's the biggest thing to watch for on this plane.

Why I Got This Plane
I specifically asked for this plane from NitroPlanes because I saw it as a potentially good beginner plane package as well as a plane that had a good base to modify from. I'm always looking for a good beginner package because people are always asking us for them. The reviews and videos I researched of it showed me that the guys that have one seem to like them very much. As soon as it was back in stock I grabbed one while I could.

How it Works Stock
The plane works just perfect stock! Does everything its suppose to do: CG is right, flys for about 10-15 minutes, very durable, does a few tricks, glides VERY NICE, and it has enough control authority (when I tell it to go up or turn it responds well!). The radio and electronics also work with all major brands (Hitec, Futuba, etc). It can take minor crashes well and is easy to repair with tape and hot glue. The build was simple and fast and there is nothing tricky about it for first time pilots. Overall, great little plane that's well under the $100 mark for everything.

For an Overall Grade I Give it an: A
What Impressed Me:
- RTF under $80!
- Well powered!
- Good controls!
- Good flight time (12+min)!
- Easy to fly!
- Very strong!
- Folding prop!
- Will take a bungee launch!
What Would be Nice:
- Replacement tail for repairs.
- Wings rubber banded on, not screwed.
- Kind of alot to ask, but something to protect the motor in a head-on crash.

Dave's Modifications
Best of all, when you outgrow it, you can modify it! Just as we did with the Wild Hawk, supe this thing up when you are bored with it! I plan to do my modifications to this plane soon and will post them on this page. Here is what I'm planing, very similar to the Wild Hawk mods:
New Tail: The stock tail can only be repaired so many times. I'm going to take mine off, and trace out a new tail out of 6mm depron with larger moving surfaces for more control!
Ailerons: Of course we need to put ailerons on it. I'm going to do a servo in each wing so I can set up spoilerons and flaperons. I don't know yet if I want to build ailerons onto the existing wing, or into the existing wing, know what I mean?
Wing: I could flatten or strengthen the wing like we did with the Wild Hawk but I think I won't on this one. The wing comes decently sturdy stock so I may just leave it.
Motor: If I put a new motor on this one I would probably have to put it on the outside rather than the inside because I don't really have any inrunners. The motor I would give it would be the Micro ParkJet with a 6x4 prop. Also a new 3 cell, 1500mah!

Bottom Line
The Slope Diver is a fun little RTF for under $90 that does what it says. It's easy to fly, very durable, upgradeable, and modifiable! I would absolutely recommended it to anyone starting out in RC, and even experienced flyers who are looking for a fun, inexpensive little plane to modify the heck out of!

F-35 test footage STOVL

F-35 STOVL Test Hovering (Part 1/2)

F-35 STOVL Test Flying (Part 2/2)

Our Next Steps with the F-35 STOVL

This is the AERIAL CAMERA we are using.

F-35 STOVL Specs:
Size: 4' wingspan, 5' nose to tail
Weighs: 4lbs 4oz
Motors: (2) Welgard 2217-06
ESC: (2) Welgard 40A
LiPos: (2) 3S, 2200mAh, 15C

BEC: (2) Sport BEC
Props: (2) 8x3.8 APC Counter Rotating (hard to find!)
Servos: HS-82MG and HS-65MG
Gyros: Esky Gyro
Onboard Camera at GraysonHobby: Aerial Cam
9CH Radio: JR XP9303

Here are some details on our progress:
- We have been working on VTOL for 2 years.
- We have had 10+ prior prototypes.
- We have tried ducted fans, this, that, and everything else... EVERYTHING else. See our videos below for some of what we have tried.
- We are using the wind and the plane's large size to help bring some stability to it.
- We are working on hovering from the "top down" rather than "the bottom up". Meaning, rather than trying to build a VTOL and then hover it off the driveway and crash (which we have done a hundred times) we are getting a large stable plane to fly slower and slower and slower until it's finally hovering!
- We have the motors vectoring down here and are testing the dual motors, new props, the vectoring, forward CG, and the ailerons set to elevons. This is enough for one day of testing.
- For the next test we need to program a fancy radio so we can have the motors mixed for airplane mode and hover mode.
- When the motors come down they will be able to swivel side to side for roll and yaw control. We learned how to do this and got the numbers and dimensions from our hovering coffee table that everyone laughed at.
- For pitch control we are using the 4 elevators and a slight headwind. This seems to work! Also, we will be programing in the 2 ESCs to mix with elevator control. Slowing one motor and speeding the other for pitch control.
- It will need 6 gyros for that. 3 for pitch, roll, and yaw control surfaces, and 3 for pitch, roll, and yaw vectoring motors.
- It should be about 2 more months until we are out for the next round of testing.
- Once it's truly hovering I'll go back and make it look nicer and put landing gear on it.
- All and all, everything is working and I'm confident the project will be a success when its done so don't you worry.

"RCPowers 3.0" Coming to a Computer Near You

Posted April 11th, 2009 at 12:09 PM by FridayTestFlying (Friday Test Flying)

The biggest challenge we have at RCPowers is trying to keep up with the growth we have been absolutely blessed with. Starting Monday May 4, 2009 we will be launching "RCPowers 3.0" and be totally redoing all our operations behind the scenes.

We have been working on the logistics of the business model for 6 months now and finally have it to the point that we can launch it full speed. Here are the major improvements and changes:

1) Videos 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. A different show each day. Show up for all of them or just pick the ones that interest you:
Mondays: Internet Business
Tuesdays: Health and Fitness
Wednesdays: Q/A
Thursdays: Outdoors
Fridays: RC

2) More time for all our friends! Yes, this is my SECOND MAJOR PRIORITY! To have some actual time to answer emails and messages, talk to people on our forum, go on the LIVE CHAT more often, etc. We are so thankful that anyone out there likes us and watches, I learn so much from talking with other goons from around the world. Connecting with all our Internet friends is a top priority for me.

3) Do more product reviews, RC and other topics as well. I can really go on a rant here, but I see traditional advertising as extremely annoying and unprofitable as I know you do too. It has become my moral mission in life to help change the way advertising is done much like billionaire Oprah has accomplished. Do you have a GOOD product? Great, let's be real, honest, show it off, have fun, laugh, and sell the heck out of it. Advertising should be educational and entertaining, not annoying.

4) Have some time to build SUPER PLANES. Over the past 6 months, and 3 years really, I have not had much time at all to actually work on or fly RC planes. 99.9% of my 100 hour work week is spent on just trying to maintain the bare minimum of the logistics needed to operate a growing Internet business. Yes, it is and looks like alot of fun but it's alot of work to make it look easy. Having some time each week to work on new super projects will allow us to get them built and flying so much sooner.

5) Network with other businesses. I see so many guys starting out their Internet businesses and I really want to invest some time to be a guest on their show, travel to events, and just be able to network with other people out there that are making things happen. I want to help others move their business forward and at the same time connecting with them only gets us more exposure. It's a win-win for everyone but I need to have time set aside to actually do this.

6) Bye-bye inefficiency! So how are we going to do MORE stuff in less time, you axe? Well, that's what I've been working on for 6 months straight, every day and night. Trying to figure out what actually works and eliminating things that do not justify their time. Every little thing we do is always tested, evaluated, and heavily analyzed by all of us here. Not to bore you with the details, but I've got a pretty good system worked out now that we have been testing over the past couple months. Ray Kroc would be proud and would probably give me a free Happy Meal, it's that good.
