Ummm i never blogged before

Posted September 4th, 2010 at 01:57 AM by wingman94
as you may have guessed from reading the title, i have never blogged before. so ill just talk about ma 2 planes.

i have a mini super cub that i got 2 years ago and is literally just falling apart. i dont even have to crash it anymore for the tail to come off. i did however fly it just yesterday and nose dived into the ground. i felt slightly noobish. the plane was fine so i continued flying and the servos stopped working once i landed it. i was too lazy to take it apart so it's still broken but dont worry i know whats wrong with it because it has happened before.

next plane... HA!

i have a cessna 182 skylane from flyzone. i got it about a year ago. its just about the best plane ever. i would definately recommend for a second plane. i only wish i would have gotten a more aerobatic plane. anyway i dont get to fly that very much because i need a ride up to the school everytime i want to fly it. so very rarely is it calm AND both me and one of my parents are free. the plane can take a lot of damage. i had a depth perception issue a while back. i was cruising through the sky when all the sudden it smashes right into a tree 80ft up. i heard a loud bang so i was sure something broke. i think as the plane was falling to the ground, the tail caught on a branch and slid out. but i re-assembled it and it was good as new! (oh yea there were a few minor scratches on the wing)

i plan on building my own planes sometime in the future. im thinking the mjv3 is the best looking motor for what i want to be doing. i have a friend who builds his own so hes the one who really inspired me.

see ya!

My Modified Wild Hawk with LiPo Power

Posted September 1st, 2010 at 12:10 AM by etabraham
I have not posted on this site in a while. I have been involved with doing a study about incorporating our community into a town (www.townofmassanutten.org).

HOWEVER, I wanted to bring you all up to date with the latest. A old modified computer power supply is working great converting 120 VAC to 12 VDC for my Dynam Supermate Charger. I have charged both NiMH and LiPo batteries. The power supply remains cool and operates smoothly as a result of a load resistor across the 5V rail.

I have finally started flying with LiPo Batteries with my modified WH with 39" straight FFF wing. And, man does it fly great . Everybody was right. I should have gone to LiPos all long time ago. It makes a huge difference.

But, I have to tell you that the performance of the Turnigy 1650 KV Bushless motor with the 3 cell (11.2V), 20C, 2200 mAh LiPo battery varies greatly dependent on the prop used -- pretty much along the trend line that the MotorCalc Program (adamone) predicted. When I went from the 12V, 1400 mAH 10C NiMH to the the 11.2V, 2200 mAh 20C LiPo using a 6x4E prop, I found that the performance only improved a little . The improvement was only in thrust -- 10-20% improvement. However, this is what the MotorCalc program somewhat predicted -- I used the MotorCalc after I flew it with both batteries. I had a 7x5E prop in the bag and used it. The difference was tremendous -- MotorCalc predicted a 50% increase in thrust -- and man that is what it looked like.

The problem was the Turnigy motor was mildly hot after a brief 6 min flight -- whereas it never had gotten even warm before -- MotorCalc predicted 22A current draw which was a bit much for my 18A ESC and the motor rated for 140W. I know that I can hear you guys now telling me that I really need to get a watt meter -- and, I know you're right -- but, not financially now.

The guy at the local hobby shop thought I could still fly with the 7x5E, but suggested that I try a 7x4 Sport (glow) prop. Motorcalc predicted largely that performance would drop 10% over the 7x5E. The actually flight performance was nearly as predicted. The motor only got warm and the ESC stayed cool. Plus, I could fly for over 15 minutes on a single charge almost at WOT the whole time. I am now having a blast with my WH.

Check out the video below. The wife tried real hard to keep up -- it is a lot more quicker now. Please check out my vertical spinning climbs -- I know they need work, but they are real cool.

Have Stick, Will Fly!
