Hey, guys! Me and greg have been talking and decided to try our hand at 3d capable planes. This is what we came up with, mine is made from 6mm depron and gregs will be 9mm epp (when he eventually builds it!) im going to maiden the plane tomorrow if the weather permits.

    Untitled.jpg
    Untitled5.jpg

    LENGH 29"
    WIDTH 30"
    WEIGHT (MINE) 14OZ
    25A ESC
    4 X 9G TOWER PRO SERVOS
    1534KV OUTRUNNER
    9X3.8 APC
    2S 1000MAH LIPO

Id like it to be a tad lighter but with the over kill electronics i have it will have to do. If all goes well, ill order the proper setup. Plans will be available from www.frcfoamies.com in 6mm and 9mm as soon as we are happy with the design. Oh and the plans will be FREE!!!

What Jay didn't mention was that we spoke about this type of plane (I was talking about buying a twisted hobbies crack pitts ) and within one half hour (!) he had the plan done! A few minutes later he had the 9mm mods done since I had already purchased 9mm epp. The epp plane should come in around 9-10 oz based on the fact that my edge 540 is around 7.5 oz with the indoor combo from Grayson, 10 amp esc, 9x3.8 prop, two 5g and one 9g servo, and a 500 mah 2s battery. Jay has depron, four 9g servos, a 1500kv higher wattage motor, 9x3.8 prop and 1000 2s battery. Given the wattage of his power system, his should perform really well. Mine will be marginal.

    Hi Greg -

From my experience with 9mm EPP, you will need to put some significant reinforcements for sure to keep it from flexing, that will drive the weight up a little bit. I have seen EPP 3D planes where the nose turns almost 45 degrees before the tail moves, so reinforcement has to be planned out well or the plane will not perform well, it will be very durable, but not as responsive as you might like.

Just spitballing, it might be a good plane to build with a combination of 9mm EPP and 6mm depron, I'm not sure which should go where, but I'm sure you will figure it out as you go along...:)

Anyway, just my $02 worth, 9mm EPP is not as nice to work with as depron, I normally used my soldering iron to melt the channels in it for cf installation, but you can also use a dremel with the right attachment.

Look forward to seeing the finished product(s)...:)

    Cheers,

    Scott

You're right Scott, for the edge i have thin ply in the wing but for this ill do 1mm cf strips. Just slice the wing and slip it in. Didn't need much adhesive and added just a couple grams.
Then for the fuselage twist, the standard diagonal bracing along the bottom out of 3mm depron. You can also stuff motor /esc wires in there.

The only weight difference would be upper wing and wing pylons which should bring it to under 10 oz. I'm really psyched to see you fly yours Jay!

F4mnect, that sounds like the RC timer motor I have (same spec as Grayson indoor combo I have on the edge) and with the 9x3.8 I'll use a 12 amp esc. That combo should do well on this.

  14. you should get some 6 channel rx's instead of those heavy a$$ 8 channels. there are a couple you can use. if you want a link I can post one. I use two different brands and never had any issues with either of them. you could even remove the cover of the 6 ch ones to make it even lighter
