F-18 with the STOCK SET UP: Ok, it's like this, RC jet designers have had real problems with EDF jets over the years primarily for two reasons:

  1) They don't have enough power.
2) They don't have enough control and stability.

As a designer myself I have SO MUCH RESPECT for the skills of Andy Chen and the crew at Exceed RC. We have tried their F4, F-35, and now F-18 and Keith and I both give them an A+ and 5/5 stars. I don't fully understand how they get these jets to work so good, but you've seen the videos, they really do fly like that!

I would say this F-18 is perfect for any advanced flyer who has got his skills down and is looking for a bigger, faster, more impressive jet. It's scale detail is beautifully accurate and it's presence at the field is big. Everything works right: controls, power, wheels, suitability, speed, aerobatics, slow flying, it's all right out of the box. Out of the box stock, it's a great jet! Scroll to the bottom of this page to see some videos of it flying stock.

Radio System: 4-Channel TX and 6CH Rx
  1) The RTF package does NOT come with a 4 cell charger!

2) Crunch the numbers on the "Receiver Ready" vs "Complete Combo" prices. You might save more money getting the "Complete Combo" and then selling the stock radio on ebay.
3) You might leave the landing gear off, its hand launches real easy.
4) No weird flight characteristics to warn you about... it flys like a normal plane.

F-18 with our HIGH ALPHA MODIFICATIONS:
You know me, I always want to try something new. When the guys down at NitroPlanes asked me to try this one out, my head started to swirl with ideas. Right away I saw its large, powerful, stable platform as the PERFECT test bed to load up with experimental gear! Oh, I love it.

What we did was make the elevators bigger, add rudders, extended the ailerons out and wired them as "flaperons/spoilerons", and the star of the show: cut in leading edge slats, now known as "fronterons". For the guys who always want to "one up" his buddy at the field, or would just love to modify this and try something new, this F-18 is an ideal platform to work off of. Scroll down for more info, pics, and videos on how we did our set up.
